CHIEF JUSTICE QAZI FAEZ ISA CHAIRED THE MEETING OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL JUDICIAL ACADEMY

Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa convened and chaired the meeting of the Board of Governors of the Federal Judicial Academy. The last meeting of the Board of Governors was held on 11 November 2019. In the Board meeting held on 25 September 2023, all the members attended: Mr. Ahmed Irfan Aslam, Federal Minister for Law & Justice, Vice- Chairman, Mansoor Usman Awan, Attorney General for Pakistan, Justice Ahmed Ali M. Sheikh, Chief Justice High Court of Sindh (through video link), Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti, Chief Justice Lahore High Court, Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, Chief Justice High Court of Balochistan, Justice Aamer Farooq, Chief Justice Islamabad High Court, Justice Muhammad Ibrahim Khan, Chief Justice, Peshawar High Court, Raja Naeem Akbar, Secretary Ministry of Law & Justice, and the Director-General, Federal Judicial Academy as Member and Secretary of the Board.

The Chairman noted that the Board had not been observing the minimum twice annual meetings and that during his tenure he will try to ensure that the minimum number of statutory meetings are not only held but exceeded. The Chairman thanked the Members for their commitment and keen interest in improving the working of the Academy. A collective desire to make the Academy a vibrant institution for ensuring the best professional training for all justice sector stakeholders, which will improve service delivery, was expressed.

Demonstrating his commitment to the Academy and to ensure excellence in its programs the Chairman proposed that the expertise of Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Judge Supreme Court of Pakistan, be availed by appointing him as a pro bono expert advisor to the Board under section 8 of the Federal Judicial Academy Act, 1997. The proposal was unanimously approved.

The Board also took up the matter of the appointment of the Director-General whose term had expired, and noted that under section 10 of the Act the Chairman had the authority to appoint the Director-General on the terms and conditions approved by the Board. Thereafter, the Chairman himself interviewed the shortlisted candidates and selected and appointed Mr. Hayat Ali Shah, retired District and Sessions Judge, as Director-General of the Academy for a period of one year on contract basis.
